FAQ Level 3 Award in Immediate Response Emergency Care (RQF)

The Level 3 Award in Immediate Response Emergency Care (RQF) provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond to medical emergencies and provide immediate care prior to the arrival of ambulance services. It is aimed at individuals working, or intending to work, in roles such as event medical staff, security personnel, and other first responders.

This course covers patient assessment, basic life support, airway management, control of life-threatening bleeding, treatment of medical emergencies, and the management of injuries and major trauma. Learners will also develop an understanding of scene safety, communication, infection control, and the responsibilities of an immediate responder.

This regulated Level 3 qualification includes approximately 37 guided learning hours and is assessed through multiple-choice assessments and practical evidence of competence. This qualification is Category D on the FPHC PHEM Skills Framework:

The qualification is aimed at individuals who work or intend to provide immediate emergency care. It forms part of the FutureQuals Immediate Response Emergency Care qualification suite.

Course Details

To achieve the Level 3 Award in Immediate Response Emergency Care (RQF), learners must successfully complete all five mandatory components of the qualification.

Course content includes:-

  • Principles of pre-hospital care and the role of an immediate responder
  • Scene safety, health and safety responsibilities, and preserving evidence
  • Communication, conflict management, and person-centred care
  • Ethical and legal considerations, consent, safeguarding, and information governance
  • Infection prevention and control, including PPE and disease transmission
  • Responder resilience, wellbeing, and stress management
  • Patient assessment, including anatomy, physiology, patient history, and physiological measurements
  • Primary and secondary surveys and clinical handover
  • Patient extrication and use of extrication equipment
  • Basic life support (BLS), AED use, and resuscitation devices
  • Airway management and foreign body airway obstruction
  • Recognition and management of life-threatening bleeding and shock
  • Treatment of respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological emergencies
  • Management of poisoning, intoxication, anaphylaxis, and diabetic emergencies
  • Management of conditions caused by extreme temperatures
  • Mental health awareness and supporting patients in crisis
  • Principles of medication administration and oxygen therapy
  • Treatment of wounds, burns, scalds, and bleeding
  • Management of musculoskeletal, head, spinal, chest, and abdominal injuries
