The Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (FREC) course is for people who work or would like to work as first response emergency care providers in a variety of sectors. Based on the recommendations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh - Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (FPHC), The Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications and the Resuscitation Council (UK).

This FREC qualification is ideal for people who work in voluntary and community activities, to enable them to provide prehospital care to patients requiring emergency care or treatment. This is an ideal start for you if you wish to progress your career within the emergency services, ambulance services or healthcare settings.

Assessment is spit into 3 components

Component 1
Basic Life support/AED
Airway ventilation
Component 2:
 Assessment and treatment of trauma 1
 Assessment and treatment of trauma 2
 Component 3:
 Assessment and treatment of illness 1 (Asthma)
 Assessment and treatment of illness 2 (Anaphylaxis)

Course content includes:-

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first responder

    • Be able to assess an incident
    • Patient Assessment and Management
    • Be able to assess and manage patients with life-threating and non-life-threatening illness and injuries
    • Be able to assess a patient’s airway
    • Be able to manage a patient’s airway
    • Be able to manage an unresponsive patient who is not breathing normally
    • Be able to safely use an AED during a resuscitation attempt and how to maintain an AED ready for use
    • Be able to administer emergency oxygen

    Emergency Trauma

    • Be able to assess and manage trauma patients
    • Be able to assess and manage catastrophic bleeding
    • Be able to assess and manage chest injuries
    • Be able to assess and manage bleeding
    • Be able to assess and manage a patient with compromised circulation
    • Know how to assess and manage wounds and eye injuries
    • Know how to assess and manage a patient with burns or scalds
    • Know how to manage a patient with sudden poisoning
    • Be able to provide emergency care to a patient with head, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries

    Focused Emergency and Urgent Care

    • Know how to identify a patient experiencing breathing difficulties
    • Know how to manage a patient experiencing breathing difficulties
    • Know how to manage a patient with anaphylaxis
    • Know how to assess and manage a patient with suspected major illness
    • Know how to manage a patient who is actively convulsing
